Whitmuir The Organic Place

About the farm

Heather and Pete

Whitmuir Farm is owned by Heather Anderson and Pete Ritchie.  The farm itself has been here for at least 300 years, with avenues of beech trees established in the 18th century.

The farm is 140 acres, with around 25% in woodland, hedges and shelter belts. This is traditionally sheep and beef country, but we also keep chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys for Christmas, and pigs for pork and bacon.  As well as livestock, we grow a wide range of vegetables and soft fruit, plus a small quantity of wheat for baking.  Being up around 900 ft on a north-facing slope, we are limited by the short growing season but we extend this a little with polytunnels and by creating sheltered growing areas.

We farm organically because it is better for the soil, the plants, the animals, the planet and us.  Our job is to produce good food and to keep the farm in good heart, with space for weeds, trees and wildlife as well as crops and livestock.  The aim of the farm is to be productive, beautiful, diverse and educational

Our farm shop won UK Organic Retailer of the Year award, and has more lines of organic produce than any other shop in Scotland.  As well as selling our own meat, eggs, vegetables and home made produce, we source food from other organic farmers and growers in Scotland, the UK and further afield.

We also have a licensed café which can be booked for private events in the evening. Whitmuir hosts the Dancing Light Gallery, which shows contemporary art in a distinctive setting.

There are marked trails round the farm, and visitors are welcome to come and see the animals – but remember to bring wellies!
